Greggs High Bay Automated Cold Store

Clegg Food Projects was appointed to deliver a new cold store for bakery giant Greggs.

Overview of Greggs’ cold store project

A brand-new fully automated high bay cold store has been completed for leading bakery chain, Greggs plc. Located at Gosforth Park Way, Longbenton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, the cold store completed in 2021 and marks a long-standing relationship.

The project is the most recent of more than 20 large-scale capital construction projects that Clegg Food Projects has delivered for Greggs, with a cumulative value of almost £100m across the UK.

The new manufacturing and distribution building is an extension to the central savoury production site, with a footprint of approximately 5,000sqm and more than 30m high.

The high bay cold store is fully automated and used for storage of frozen products for distribution, the location of the project is directly between two existing manufacturing units on land owned by Greggs.

Extensive groundworks and piling installations were put in place to cope with the high structure, as well as the volume and weight of the products being stored in the building. In addition, a power supply from the adjacent manufacturing unit was installed.

Once appointed, the Clegg Food Project’s design and construction team participated in coordination meetings with Greggs and its specialist mechanical handling systems suppliers and logistics consultants.

The construction sequence was continually updated and modified as the client finalised the details of the handling systems installation and operations. Access routes and installation and commissioning plans were jointly agreed upon, and equipment was installed as the main construction works continued to meet the overall project timescale.
